Whenever a major honors show nears, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and fill the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything during that awards season
- Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences globally and have been for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
